*raises both hands*
Literally guys, I have this HUGE love/hate relationship with cardio. It sucks and it’s miserable, but it makes me feel good afterwards.
Cardio can be so unbearable, but often times it’s a necessary part of our workout regimen in order to burn more calories (so we can eat more food obviously). I’ve struggled in the past with getting bored with my same old cardio routine. Being bored isn’t motivating!
I’ve dabbled in effective ways to make cardio more bearable and maybe even a little fun too, here are a couple tips I’ve used to spice up my cardio routine.
Choose Cardio That You ENJOY
If you hate running, DON’T RUN. There is no single right way to perform cardio. There are tons of different options for cardio that are a lot more fun than running and the elliptical such as swimming, biking, hiking, even group sporting events can be considered cardiovascular exercise. So get creative, explore your different options, and find cardio that you enjoy! Click HERE to find hundreds of different ways to get your blood pumping.
Jam Out to Good Music
There are times when I can’t find the motivation to get active, it happens! But when I put my headphones on and click on that perfect playlist and I start moving my feet to the beat of the music, I turn into a full on Lady BOSS ready to conquer the world. Listening to music that you like can really change your attitude during cardio, or any workout for that matter. Find music that makes you feel powerful and strong and that puts you in the mood to absolutely SLAY your workout.
Pick a Workout Partner
Support from another person who is putting themselves through the same workout you are really makes it easier to keep going. Knowing that you aren’t in it alone is motivation all on its own. Not only are you being motivated, but you are motivating your partner as well. Having a workout partner makes cardio less boring because you have someone to talk to and spend time with. Find someone who will support you on your fitness journey and who has some of the same goals in mind as you do. Then go crush your cardio together!
Mix it Up
You don’t have to stick to the same cardio workout every time, in fact I recommend switching it up! Our bodies get used to certain workouts over time, causing them to be less effective. So switching up your cardio from swimming to hiking not only eliminates the problem of boredom, but it keeps your body from adapting to one certain exercise.
Ah the great outdoors; ever changing and never boring. Whether you live in a busy city or the rural suburbs, performing cardio outside makes for an interesting and entertaining workout. Don’t let the beautiful days go to waste. Get some fresh air! The outdoors has this magical way of making everything better, including cardio.
It’s hard to enjoy cardio or get motivated to exercise in general without a payoff in the end. Now there are obvious long term rewards of cardio and exercise such as a higher metabolism, better heart health, stronger lungs, muscle mass, more calories burned, etc. But I also understand the desire for immediate pay off for exercise as well. Sadly, we can’t speed up the process of raising our metabolism and increasing muscle mass NATURALLY (stay away from steroids people), so we need to come up with our own immediate rewards. Make goals such as performing 90 minutes of cardio in a week and reward yourself with a new workout top if you completed your goal. Or maybe if you complete 45 minute of cardio in a day, rewards yourself with a donut afterwards. Little things like this is what keeps us on track to the more long term, health related goals. So give it a try!
Get a Fitness Tracker Watch
Fitness trackers are all the rage now a days. And with so many different brands and styles to choose from, there is bound to be a fitness tracker that meets your needs. The reason why I recommend using a fitness tracker is because it monitors your everyday movements and gives you a goal to reach. I have a Fitbit Charge HR, and I loooove it. It not only counts my steps, but I can monitor my heart rate, see how well I’m sleeping, and log individual workouts and see the stats; making it great for cardio!
Well peeps, thats all for now.
P.S. In case you’re blind and can’t tell, I gave Healthy Habits | Happy Heart a lil makeover. So my deepest apologies for the few days we were offline. New design=new ideas! I have a lot of awesome stuff I can’t wait to share with ya. New workouts, new recipes, new tips and tricks…SO MUCH STUFF!
Anyhow, I’m gonna go workout for the first of two times today (I’m a lil crazy, but thats the life of a trainer lol), so later babes!
