So I plan on eating healthy all day. You know, I have eggs & avo toast for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, greek yogurt for a snack, and spaghetti squash for dinner. THEN…1 pint of ice cream, 12 cookies, a bag of chips and cheese dip, and freaking brownies as a “light” bed time snack. UMMMMMMM.
Who can relate?!
There’s something about late nights that just gets to me. I turn into a ravenous monster who can’t be stopped until every last bit of unhealthy food in my pantry is in my stomach.
Now I will say there is a time and a place to have cheat meals (still hate that phrase) and give into your sweet tooth. But eating like a starving pregnant woman in a dessert factory just won’t do. Regardless, late night cravings are still there, so instead of ignoring them and being miserable, I decided to start eating healthier alternatives! This way I still get to curb the craving with something sweet and/or salty (depending on my mood) without consuming an unholy amount of calories, and I get some nutrients too!
And I thought I’d share some of my favorite snack combos with you babes!
(PS…you can click on the pictures of my snack options to find where to purchase them!)
Yogurt is full of health benefits: high in protein, loaded with vitamins and minerals, full of good bacteria that promotes healthy digestion, and it can help you recover faster after a tough workout! Then you add in some granola which is high in fiber. Granola can be tricky though because some brands can be super high in sugar. Purely Elizabeth is definitely my favorite brand because there’s no added crap, plus it’s fairly low in sugar!
Dried Banana Chips & Melted Dark Chocolate
This is probably my absolute FAVORITE late night cravings snack combo of all time. It perfectly curbs my sweet tooth. I get these banana crisps from Trader Joe’s and there’s no added chemicals or weird stuff in the ingredients, plus bananas are full of fiber and potassium. Bananas don’t lose any of the nutrients or fiber when they’re dehydrated so you still get alllll the benefits! And if y’all already know my love affair with dark chocolate. It’s so good for your heart health and and blood circulation. For me, the darker the better! So I always make sure my dark chocolate is at least 70% cocoa. My favorite brand, Chocolove, makes a 77% cocoa bar and it’s amazing!
I actually have a killer recipe coming to the blog next week that involves apples & peanut butter, so stay tuned! But this snack combo is way simpler. I love dried fruit because it doesn’t go bad as quickly as regular fruit does, but you still get all the benefits! And apples are FULL of fiber. Peanut butter is full of healthy fats as well, you can even add a little bit of all natural honey if you want to amp up the sweetness. Personally, the cinnamon on the apple crisps does the trick for me but you can totally play around with the flavors to find what you like best! The peanut butter I like has a hint of honey mixed into it already, so it’s just the right amount of sweetness.
This is definitely my go-to savory treat right now. These snapeas are addictive, plus they’re low cal! And don’t get me started on my love for hummus, seriously any kind will do. I’ve even tried making my own hummus, but the lazy girl in me likes to buy it from the grocery store instead. As long as you pay attention to the ingredients, making sure there’s no added chemicals or words you can’t pronounce, store bought hummus is perfect. I also make sure to pre portion my snapeas & hummus out before I start eating it, otherwise I’d eat the whole bag/container in a matter of minutes! So just spoon some hummus out on a place and take a few handfuls of the snapeas so that you’re not over eating.
I mean, the number of healthy snack combinations are endless. These are definitely my faves, I always have these snacks in my kitchen!
What’re some of you’re go-to late night cravings healthy snacks? I always need more ideas. A girls gotta eat, after all.
Have a great weekend!
