Today I’m traveling to visit my family for a full week! It’ll be great having a break from work/responsibilities in general. My little brother is graduating high school and I have major mixed emotions (starting to tear up just thinking about it). Then at the end of the week I’ll be participating in a Tough Mudder with my dad. It should be a good week, no doubt!
The only downside to visiting family is definitely the traveling part.
My weakness is airports. I don’t really know why but for some reason every time I step through security my brain tells me it’s a calorie & sugar free-for-all. Like my eating is seriously THE WORST at airports, who could blame me though? There’s so many snacks & restaurants that are clearly not good for you but they’re staring you right in the face as you wait to board. The restaurants always win. UGH.
And don’t even GET ME STARTED on layovers.
Every time I have a layover I’m usually not that hungry but then I’ll see all these bomb ass restaurants that smell so good and then I’m like “Wellllll maybe I AM hungry for a burger and some cheesecake!”
No, I definitely was not hungry.
Then I get on my next plane feeling sluggish & bloated. If I’m uncomfortable on a plane, you DO NOT want to sit next to me.
It’s more than just the constant food struggle, though. On top of that, airports are gigantic cesspool full of sick people and diseases that are so hard to get away from.
I’m pretty sure most people will agree with me when I say that staying healthy airports (& vacations in general, for that matter) is a nightmare.
So in efforts to stay healthy & on track while traveling, I put together a few tips that might help you (& me lol):
1} Drink A LOT of water. I like to bring an empty bottle with me through security and fill it up at least twice before boarding the plane. And usually the flight attendants will fill up the water bottle for me on the plane also.
2} Stock up on some healthy snacks in the terminal. I promise, they healthy snacks are there! We just never look for them. HA. Usually there will be a stand with some fresh fruit and other little snacks. My go-to is definitely almonds & a banana. I make sure to get enough to keep me full for the entire plane ride. And sometimes I’ll grab some dark chocolate because, let’s be real, I have the biggest sweet tooth in the world. If the salads look fresh, I’ll pick up one of those too. Leafy greens are a great way to boost your immune system!
3} On that note, bring hand sanitizer. Airplanes are full of sickos and germs and they are NOT welcome near me. Getting sick is something I just don’t have time for. So I slather on the hand sanitizer and wash my hands as much as I can.
4} Don’t stay seated the whole time. Move around! Sitting for long periods of time is very damaging to your body, especially your lower back. You should stand for at least 2 minutes every hour, so I try to walk the aisle of the plane once for every hour I’m flying.
The other people in my row probably hate me for getting up so much, especially if I don’t have an aisle seat. But I mean…..bad back or angry people in my row? You gotta pick your battles. HA.
Anyways, I gotta get on a plane & I’m not sure that $8 wifi is really worth it to be honest. I like to unplug from the world on planes anyway, so reading is my new thing. Currently, I’m reading Your Holistically Hot Transformation by Marissa Vicario. It’s all about teaching women to trust themselves with healthy dieting choices without resorting to crash diets. It seems pretty fitting for this post. Don’t you think? I’ll give y’all an overview once I finish it!
